Who is teaching stylists how to actually cut hair?

You may be wondering who the evil mastermind is behind this whole short-haircutting experiment. That would be Ray.

The idea for Bob University really started years ago when Ray was heavily involved in color education and training stylists. He kept noticing the same thing: stylists were putting a ton of time and money into getting better at color, but haircutting was often getting pushed to the side. And at some point he realized… it’s pretty hard to create beautiful color on a haircut that isn’t working in the first place.

But honestly, Ray understood that fear firsthand.

As a younger stylist working in salons, short haircut requests could be intimidating. A long-layer haircut felt a little safer. There was room to blend, soften, and hide a lack of confidence. A pixie? Not so much. Every decision shows.

And Ray wasn’t the only one who felt it. He remembers seeing stylists practically bolt for the back room when a walk-in pixie request came through the door. Everyone suddenly had somewhere very important to be. 😂

Years later, he started seeing the other side of that fear in his own chair. Women were regularly coming to Ray asking him to fix bobs and pixies they had received at other salons. Some were frustrated, some embarrassed, and some genuinely upset over what had happened to their hair.

After enough correction appointments, it became pretty clear this wasn’t just a handful of bad haircut stories. There was a real gap in the industry when it came to confident, skilled short haircutting.

That’s where Bob University came from.

The goal is to help stylists become stronger, more confident haircutters, grow their creativity, and ultimately make more money behind the chair. But there’s another side to it too: helping clients actually find stylists they can trust when they’re ready to make a big change and go short.

Ray has been behind the chair since 2009 and was named Colorado Hairstylist of the Year, but teaching has always been one of his favorite parts of the job. His students tend to describe his teaching as easy to understand, relaxed, and practical. No unnecessary jargon or trying to make haircutting sound more complicated than it needs to be. Just a system that helps things finally click.

And if The Office handed out Dundies around here, Ray would absolutely win Loudest / Most Hilarious Laugh. Probably uncontested.
